Описание

This volume examines the various themes and events surrounding the visit of Lev Shestov (1866-1938), a major Russian philosopher, to Eretz Israel in spring 1936. The story of the preparations leading up to this trip, and of the time spent by Shestov in the Holy Land — the surviving correspondence between various individuals and institutions; the lectures that he delivered in Palestine; the philosopher’s encounters with the intellectual elite of the country; the contemporary coverage of this visit; the reminiscences written about it much later, etc. — amounts to a lengthy, multiplot “novel”. The major innovation of this “novel” lies in the fact that, apart from analyzing the documents pertaining to the organization of this trip (this is the most comprehensive edition of these documents to date), it also gives a thorough introduction to all the persons who were drawn into its orbit (the Lowtzky, Mandelberg, Shor, Eitington, and Loutzky families, as well as others). The book also features the correspondence between Shestov and the eminent Jewish philosopher Martin Buber (1928-1937), which is published both in the original German and in English translation. This edition is illustrated with rare photographs that have never been published before.
