Description

We are pleased to present the postage stamps of various countries from 1840 to 1913, ranging from the issue of the Penny Black, which marks the beginning of the history of philately, to the First World War, which changed the former world order. The book reproduces the structure of a 1914 stamp album; the stamps are accompanied by detailed statistical information about the countries that issued then in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, which will help the reader get his bearings in what may be a somewhat unfamiliar world for him. Viewed from this angle the stamps become unique witnesses of a bygone age. Most of the material used here was provided by the A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communications, which possesses one of the world's richest philatelic collections.
