This book analyzes the causes, effects and recovery from two major shocks to the economy in the 20th century: the Great Depression of the 1930s in the USA, and the Russian post-Soviet depression of the 1990s in post-Soviet Russia. It explores the contours of these two events and the role of oligarchs and the state in their unfolding. The author studies and compares the Russian and US economies starting from the first contacts between American colonists and Russians, all the way up to contemporary multilateral interstate relations between the two countries.
