Verbalrektion in den «Vesti-Kuranty» (1600-1660). Eine historisch-philologische Untersuchung zur mittelrussischen Syntax

The purpose of this monograph is to give a detailed description of 17th-century Russian case syntax, as reflected in the first Russian hand-written newspapers, "Vesti-Kuranty" (V-K), which consisted for the most part of translations from German, Dutch and Swedish printed texts: regular newspapers and news pamphlets, political pamphlets, peace treaties etc. A large number of source texts - corresponding to more than 300 Russian hand-written pages - are presented for the first time, e.g. the peace treaties between Sweden and Denmark (Brömsebro 1645, translated from Swedish), between Spain and the States-General of the Netherlands (Münster 1648, translated from Dutch) and between the German Empire and Sweden (Osnabrück 1648, translated from German). Middle-Russian case syntax, which is characterized by rich variations of rectional patterns, has not yet been described in a satisfactory way. All collocations with verbs that govern more than one non-prepositional case form within the corpus of the V-K texts have been analysed and are described against the background of other (mainly 17th-century) Russian texts. If possible, the Russian syntactical constructions are compared with the source texts in order to ascertain the degree to which these influenced the translation. This study shows that: the rectional patterns used in the V-K usually are not modelled on the source text, but represent autonomous constructions; almost all rectional patterns represented in the V-K can be found in other Russian sources - earlier, contemporary or later - as well. Thus, the system of verbal rection in the V-K can be said to be an adequate reflection of the general 17th-century Russian rectional system.
